Instructional academic staff considering adopting, modifying, or creating Open Educational Resources through June 2025 are invited to apply for funding and support through the OER Program

Through this program, we hope to replicate the positive outcomes other universities and colleges have realized like reduced time to graduation and student debt, increases in student learning outcome achievement, a reduction in equity gap indicators, and increased student retention.

While filling out the application, consider these levels to help you decide how much funding the OER Program Team should allocate toward your project:

OER Levels Level Description Funding
Level 1

Instructors make minor changes to an existing OER and minor course design changes. Requires self-evaluation of course using a provided rubric. Instructors at this level must also complete a review of an OER textbook

Examples include:

  • Using OER textbook with no changes and updating course quizzes or other assessments.
$750
Level 2

Instructors make major changes to an existing OER textbook or compile several texts together in a new way and redesign their course to include new materials. Requires self-evaluation of course using a provided rubric.

Examples include:

  • Updating examples or portions of a text while keeping the bulk of the content the same.
  • Compiling various resources, such as library articles, videos, and other open access materials, and providing to students through Canvas.
$1500
Level 3

Instructors author original work and redesign their course to include the new materials. Requires self-evaluation of course using a provided rubric.

Examples include:

  • Creating instructional videos that are used in lieu of a traditional textbook.
  • Writing at least 4 supplemental chapters to an existing OER.
  • Authoring a book, lab manual, or other course text from scratch.
$3000

If you are selected as an OER Program participant, these are the responsibilities of each instructor:

  • set project dates with your team;
  • design and modify OER;
  • commit to using course materials that are zero cost to students, unless first discussed with OER Librarian;
  • share a list of resources you’ve used in the past;
  • provide the project team with a copy of your syllabus and learning outcomes;
  • provide the project team access to your Canvas course;
  • Update course assessments and lectures to incorporate new materials;
  • agree to a creative commons license of your choosing when modifying or creating OER;
  • complete the open educational resources Canvas course (30 min);
  • meet monthly with your project team, and on an as needed basis;
  • complete OER self-reflection rubric;
  • Address feedback from OER team on evaluation rubric;
  • Complete a post-project meeting with Digital Collections Librarian;
  • complete a post-project survey
