Green Bay Estuary Community Scan-a-thon

Welcome to the Green Bay Estuary Community Scan-a-thon Library Guide!

Green Bay Estuary Digital Archives Collection

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has a long history of significant water-related research and education programs related to the Green Bay Estuary. Since its beginning, the University has been environmentally focused, with faculty and students creating a long history of water-related research. Now, UW-Green Bay is the state lead for the designation of a Green Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR)

As part of the NERR designation process, the University and the Wisconsin DNR have partnered to digitize and make accessible original materials related to the region’s water history, science, and cultural impact. The digitization effort will be built from the UW-Green Bay Archives' collections of materials which tell the story of the Green Bay Estuary, as well as a community scan-a-thon event that is being planned for 2023.

What is a Community Scan-a-thon?

A community scan-a-thon is an event where individuals from the local area bring materials such as photographs, letters, maps, and documents to the Archives to be digitized. During the event, archive staff members and volunteers scan the items donors bring and collect data. The items will be returned to the donors during the event. Those items will then become part of the growing Green Bay Estuary Digital Archives Collection, which will be published and available for research by late August 2023.
