Title: Papers, 1878-1966

Summary: Papers of librarian Flora Neil Davidson, who worked for many years at the University of Wisconsin, which present a portrait of an early twentieth century career woman and glimpses of her work as a librarian. Included are several volumes of "diaries" which contain journal entries, poems, and quotations from written sources and from conversations; a list of books read; a guest book; a scrapbook with swatches of her dresses and descriptions of them and where they were worn; an extensive travel diary describing a 1929 trip to New England; photographs of Davidson and of Madison, particularly the University of Wisconsin; and an autograph album, 1878-1885, which belonged to Allie M. Greene. The diaries, including the travel diary, are indexed.

Author/Creator: Davies, Hazel Lee, 1890-1980

Title: Papers, 1895-1976

Summary: Diaries, correspondence, family papers, and photographs of a graduate nurse from Hortonville, Wis., who from 1918 to 1947 worked as a clerk and statistician-economist for the U.S. Coal Commission of the Bureau of Mines. Included are girlhood letters and a 1906 senior class-meeting notebook from Jennings Seminary in Aurora, Ill., and the Chicago Training School, both girls’ boarding schools; letters and reminiscent articles about nursing and nurses’ training, ca. 1908-1918, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Racine, Wis.; and files on homes in Florida and Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Among the correspondence are letters from Davies’ niece, Lt. Col. Frances M. McClurkin, an Air Force nurse, 1955-1975, who was stationed in Japan and the Philippines; and letters from German and English women after World War II.

Title: Matthew Dinsdale papers, 1836-1897

Summary: Letters by Reverend Matthew Dinsdale written from Linden and other Wisconsin settlements to his relatives in Askrigg, Yorkshire, England, describing his trip to the United States in 1844 and giving minute advice to prospective immigrants; his pastoral services as a Methodist minister at Potosi, Wisconsin, and in the Lake Winnebago circuit; economic conditions as seen through his work as a clerk in stores at Linden and elsewhere; his 1849 experiences en route to California via New York and Panama; and his work experiences en route to California via New York and Panama; and his work for the United States Christian Commission in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1865. With these are 4 brief diaries and a record of personal religious experiences.

Title: Charles Engil Papers, 1942-2014

Summary: This collection contains correspondence between Charles Engil and his girlfriend (later spouse), Janice DeBroux. The letters reveal the concerns of a young couple in the mid-twentieth century about marriage, family, children, and finances. The collection also contains nearly seventy years of diaries kept by Charles Engil, Janice DeBroux, and Glennie De Broux, The combined diaries document family relationships, high school years, jobs, marriage, and health issues.

Title: Molly Fisher Letters, 1943-1952

Summary: Letters written to Molly Fisher, a Girl Guide from Scotland, from four Girl Scouts in Madison (Wis.) in which they discuss the effects of World War II on the U.S. homefront including family members serving in the military and the effects of rationing; popular fashions and clothing patterns; recreational activities such as camping, homecoming, and sporting events; and popular motion pictures and music.
