Library Annual Snapshot 2018

Accomplishments

In a year that included our Archives and Area Research Center receiving the Governor’s Archives Award, we have many reasons to be proud of our work!  Much of 2018 was devoted to “remodeling”, in many senses of the word.  We added new study spaces like the beautiful Library Commons, and refreshed the furniture in the computer lab and third floor.  In a more metaphorical sense, we began reshaping our workflows and our digital spaces to support and incorporate our three branch libraries in Marinette, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan.

Adding to the rich tapestry of UW-Green Bay’s culture of collaboration and innovation, we supported, hosted, and partnered with others on campus and in the community.  From assisting with research visits to the library and Archives, to helping to host the National History Day regional competition, we supported another banner year of history scholarship from area schools.  In partnership with the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, we hosted and attended an academically invigorating Digital Scholarship Institute.  In honor of the 200th anniversary of the publishing of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, we organized and hosted FrankenTalks, which was a fun and fascinating look at this extraordinary work, through an interdisciplinary lens.  A small group of staff also worked with the Pride Center to update their resource collection, including a reorganization of the classification scheme to thoughtfully categorize the books in a more inclusive and approachable way.

We like to mix a little fun in with our academic support, too!  We hosted another Bash in the Stacks in the fall, welcoming students to campus with crafts, games, prizes, food, and music.  December brings end-of-term stress, which we help to ease with a visit from our furry friends (and their humans) from the Packerland Kennel Club.  March Book Madness (like basketball, but with books!) helped to chase away cabin fever with a tournament-style battle for the ultimate winner.  Events like these help to show the library as an engaged place that offers more than just books and quiet study space.

These are just some of the things we do, beyond the day to day, that are supportive of the needs of the campus community and contribute positively to the rise of UW-Green Bay.
