How to get started on the research process

- Choose a topic! What do you want to learn more about? Choose something you find interesting.
- Create a list of keywords. Find synonyms and create a word bank.
- Do some background research on your topic. Use an encyclopedia or a quality website to find more keywords to help your search.
- Decide on the type of information you want to use. Books? Journal articles? Websites?
- Use Search@UW to locate resources. Use your word bank to perform several searches to find the most relevant information.
- Evaluate your resources using the CAARP method: Currency, Authority, Accuracy, Relevance, and Purpose.
- Incorporate your resources into your paper or project to support your ideas.
- Review your research for any gaps or missing information.
- Cite your sources using your assigned citation style (MLA, APA, or Chicago).
