Example APA References

A References page lists all of the sources cited throughout a paper. Reference list entries generally include the author, date, title, and source. Here are commonly cited types of sources and example references.

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year of publication). Title of article. Title of Journal, volume number(issue number), page range. https://doi.org/10.0000/0000

McCauley, S. M., & Christiansen, M. H. (2019). Language learning as language use: A cross-linguistic model of child language development. Psychological Review, 126(1), 1-51. https://doi.org/10.1037/rev0000126

If a journal article has a number instead of a page range, use the word "Article" followed by the article number in place of the page range. For example:

In-Text Citations

  • In-text (or parenthetical) citations signal when you are quoting, summarizing, or paraphrasing someone else's work or ideas.
  • Each in-text citation should match a source in your reference list, helping readers locate the original material.
  • Citation placement depends on how you include the source in your writing—there’s more than one correct way to do it!
