Social Worker's Desk Reference - Albert R. Roberts (Ed.)
Call Number: Reference HV40 .S6464 2002
ISBN: 019514211X
This comprehensive resource is the first of its kind in the field of social work. Written by leading scholars and practitioners in the field, it covers the full spectrum of social work practice. Each chapter includes up-to-date information, practice guidelines, and treatment plans necessary for success in today's managed-care environment. Social work practitioners and agency administrators are increasingly confronted with having to do more with less, and to make decisions and provide services as quickly as possible. There is a widespread need for ready access to essential information about effective services and treatment approaches--information that is both reliable and highly accessible.

Making Cities Work: Prospects and Policies for Urban America - Robert P. Inman (Ed.)
Call Number: HT123 .M285 2009
ISBN: 069113104X
Successful cities provide jobs, quality schools, safe and clean neighborhoods, effective transportation, and welcoming spaces for all residents. But cities must be managed well if they are to remain attractive places to work, relax, and raise a family; otherwise residents, firms, and workers will leave and the social and economic advantages of city living will be lost. Drawing on cutting-edge research in the social sciences, the contributors explore optimal ways to manage the modern city and propose solutions to today's most pressing urban problems. Topics include the urban economy, transportation, housing and open space, immigration, race, the impacts of poverty on children, education, crime, and financing and managing services. The contributors show how to make cities work for diverse urban constituencies, and why we still need cities despite the many challenges they pose. Making Cities Work brings the latest findings in urban economics to policymakers, researchers, and students, as well as anyone interested in urban affairs.

Redesigning the American Dream: the Future of Housing, Work, and Family Life - Hayden, Delores
Call Number: HD7293 .H39 2002
ISBN: 0393730948
Americans still build millions of dream houses in neighborhoods that sustain Victorian stereotypes of the home as 'woman's place' and the city as 'man's world.' Urban historian and architect Dolores Hayden tallies the personal and social costs of an American 'architecture of gender' for the two-earner family, the single-parent family, and single people. Many societies have struggled with the architectural and urban consequences of women's paid employment: Hayden traces three models of home in historical perspective--the haven strategy in the United States, the industrial strategy in the former USSR, and the neighborhood strategy in European social democracies--to document alternative ways to reconstruct neighborhoods.
