The Study of Dying: From Autonomy to Transformation - Allan Kellehear (Ed.)
Call Number: HQ1073 .S786 2009 (6th floor, Stacks)
ISBN: 0521517672
"What is it really like to die? Though our understanding about the biology of dying is complex and incomplete, greater complexity and diversity can be found in the study of what human beings encounter socially, psychologically and spiritually during the experience. Contributors from disciplines as diverse as social and behavioural studies, medicine, demography, history, philosophy, art, literature, popular culture and religion examine the process of dying through the lens of both animal and human studies."

Obituaries in American Culture - Janice Hume
Call Number: E169.1 .H94 2000 (6th floor, Stacks)
ISBN: 157806242X
"What obituaries tell us about our culture, past and present: 'Within the short period of a year she was a bride, a beloved wife and companion, a mother, a corpse,' reported The National Intelligencer on the death of Elizabeth Buchanan in 1838. Such obituaries fascinate us. Few of us realize that, when examined historically, they can reveal not only information about the departed but also much about American culture and about who and what we value."

Sorrow & Solace: The Social World of the Cemetery - Philip Bachelor
Call Number: GT3320 .B23 2004 (6th floor, Stacks)
ISBN: 089503297X
"With this book, Philip Bachelor makes an important contribution to contemporary knowledge of bereavement, mourning, and commemoration. The text focuses on the importance of cemeteries in the lives of everyday mourners, and ways in which our bereaved give meaning to and draw value from their commemorative activities."

Roadside Crosses in Contemporary Memorial Culture - Holly Everett
Call Number: CC305 .E84 2002 (6th floor, Stacks)
ISBN: 1574411500
"In this study of roadside crosses, the first of its kind, Holly Everett presents the history of these unique commemoratives and their relationship to contemporary memorial culture.
