Osama bin Laden, founder of the al-Qaeda organization, and organizer of the September 11 terrorist attacks was killed by U.S. forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan on May 1, 2011. Eluding an international manhunt since 9/11, bin Laden was found hiding in a compound near the Pakistani capital. Some intelligence analysts estimate he may have been in hiding there for the last five years.
Born into a wealthy Saudi family in 1957, bin Laden participated in the Afghani mujahideen against the Soviets in the 1980s, and later formed the al-Qaeda terrorist network. He moved throughout the Middle East and North Africa in the 1990s. Most known as responsible for the September 11 terrorist attacks, bin Laden was also behind the the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, and the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole.
After the U.S. raid on his Pakistani compound, bin Laden was killed by a team of U.S. Navy SEALS. His body was eventually transported to the USS Carl Vinson where he was buried at sea.
