From Our Bookshelves

Themes in Contemporary Art - Gill Perry and Paul Wood (Eds.)
Call Number: N71 .P32 1997 (6th floor, Stacks)
ISBN: 0300102976
In this fourth volume of the Art of the Twentieth Century series, the contributors address a fascinating variety of themes relating to art from the 1960s to the end of the century—the period of “postmodernism.”

What is Contemporary Art - Terry Smith
Call Number: N6497 .S65 2009 (6th floor, Stacks)
ISBN: 0226764303
Who gets to say what counts as contemporary art? Artists, critics, curators, gallerists, auctioneers, collectors, or the public? Revealing how all of these groups have shaped today’s multifaceted definition, Terry Smith brilliantly shows that an historical approach offers the best answer to the question: What is Contemporary Art?

Cover Art
Since '45: America and the Making of Contemporary Art - Katy Siegel
Call Number: N6512 .S544 2011X (6th floor, Stacks)
ISBN: 9781861897732
Since ’45 details the collision of American history and modern art. For the more than half-century since World War II, New York has been the center of world art, with an influence that extends well beyond the continent. Since ’45 discusses how artists’ preoccupations with issues of race, mass culture, the individual, suburbia, apocalypse, and nuclear destruction have come to find their place in art works.

Cover Art
In the Making: Creative Options for Contemporary Art - Linda Weintraub
Call Number: N6512 .W3873 2003 (6th floor, Stacks)
ISBN: 1891024590
From the first page to the last, from Thomas Kinkaid (really!) to Matthew Barney, this book serves as a launching pad. Conclusions are perpetually delayed. Resolutions are continually postponed. The text is written for takeoff, not arrival. It is a first step for readers' explorations of current modes of art making and for their own future artistic achievements.
